I Have A Script And It Is Not True

It came on a card.

Suggested language. Three sentences, professionally written, perfectly polite, and every one of them technically defensible.

And you cannot say them.

Not because they are lies exactly. They are the kind of sentences that are constructed to be unfalsifiable, which is a different thing from being true, and you can feel the difference in your mouth.

You read them twice on Monday and put the card in the drawer under the counter.

And somebody is going to come in and ask you within about ten minutes.

Here is what makes this specific and hard.

You know why the card exists. Somebody in a position of responsibility had to write something that two hundred and eleven people could say without making anything worse, and given that constraint the card is a reasonable piece of work.

You are not angry at the card.

You just cannot put those words in your own mouth in front of a woman you have known for six years, and you have no permission to say anything else, and there is nobody to ask.

There is a verse about truth in the place where people actually meet, and it uses a word about location.

Truth and peace in your gates

Zechariah gives an instruction and puts it somewhere specific.

These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates. (Zechariah 8:16, King James Version)

In your gates. That is the location, and it is the useful word.

A gate in that world was not a decoration. It was where business was done and where disputes were settled and where a person met the public. It was the counter.

You have been given an instruction that lands exactly where you are standing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put it there. Zechariah 8:16 puts the truth and the peace in the gates rather than in a document, and He put it in the place where a person actually meets somebody.

Now the two words together, because they are given as a pair and that is the whole answer.

Truth and peace. Not truth alone. Not peace alone. Both, in one act, at the gate.

The card is trying to do the peace half without the truth half. That is exactly what is wrong with it and why it will not go into your mouth.

You have been asked for both halves rather than one, and it is written that the judgment of truth and peace is executed in the gates. The Spirit of God is the one who supplies them together, and Zechariah 8 does not offer either one on its own.

And that reframes the card entirely.

The card is not evil and the people who wrote it are not liars. They were asked to produce peace at scale, by people who cannot be at any of the two hundred and eleven gates, and peace at scale is about all a card can carry.

The truth half was always going to have to come from whoever is standing at the gate.

You are the one carrying the half the card could never carry, and the Holy Spirit is the one who assigned that to the person on the spot. Scripture puts both of them in the gate rather than in the head office, and Zechariah 8:16 is where the assignment sits.

What your sentence has in it

Let me be practical, because she is coming in and you need words.

Your sentence has to be true and it has to be peaceable, and both of those are possible at once, and it is shorter than the card.

Something like: I do not have a good answer for you. What I can tell you is what I am doing about it at this end. And I am sorry, because six years is a long time to have been coming in here.

Three clauses. Every one true. Not one of them makes anything worse.

You have a true sentence that carries peace in it, and Zechariah 8:16 asks for exactly that combination at the gate. The Spirit of God is the one who gives plain words in the moment, and He does not need them to be impressive.

Notice what it does not do. It does not criticize the name over your door. It does not speculate. It does not repeat the card.

It says the true thing about your own position, which is that you do not have an answer, and then it gives her the one thing you actually have, which is what you are doing.

You are handing over what you have rather than what you were given, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes three clauses do more than three sentences on a card. The written word puts the truth and the peace in the hands of the person at the gate, and Zechariah 8 is why.

And one plain thing, because this site will not skip it. If the card is asking you to say something you believe is actively false rather than merely thin, that is a different matter and it belongs with somebody qualified rather than with an article. Nothing here asks anybody to say a false thing at their own counter.

You are not being asked to say anything false, and Scripture puts the truth first in the pair rather than the peace. The Spirit of God is the one who is clear about the order, and Zechariah 8:16 names truth before peace on purpose.

Put the card down

So here is the thing to do, and it is physical, and it is before she comes in.

Take the card out of the drawer and put it somewhere out of sight. Not in the bin, if that feels wrong. Out of the drawer under the counter and somewhere you will not reach for it.

Then, when she comes in, say your own three clauses.

You are speaking rather than reciting, and Zechariah 8:16 puts the executing of truth and peace in the gates where you are standing. The Spirit of God is the one at that counter, and He is not going to hand you a card.

The reason it has to be moved physically is that a card within reach gets reached for. It is the safe thing, it is right there, and under pressure a hand goes to whatever is nearest.

Out of sight, and there is nothing to reach for, and your own mouth is the only thing available, which is what the verse asks for anyway.

You have your own mouth and it has never once been issued to anybody, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies both. It is written that the truth and the peace are executed in the gates, and Zechariah 8:16 is where they are put together.

Then open in the morning and stand at the counter the way you always do.
