It is always the same four.
Not a spreadsheet. Four figures, and your mind runs them in the same order every night, and it has been doing it since about the spring.
You do not decide to start. You surface at some hour and they are already running, the way a machine in another room is already running when you notice it.
And then you lie there and let it happen, because stopping it has never worked.
By four you are usually doing something else. That is the part that has begun to frighten you.
The four figures lead somewhere, and where they lead is a set of scenes. What you would say. Who you would have to tell. What the house would look like empty. Where the children would go to school.
None of those scenes are decisions. They are not planning. They are just what a mind does at three in the morning with a set of numbers and no daylight.
But they are getting further along than they used to.
You have not said this to anybody. It is not the kind of thing that comes up, and the daytime version of you would be embarrassed by the four o'clock version.
Let me say something plain before the verse, and it is the most important sentence here.
If those scenes have started to include not being here, that is not a character flaw and it is not a spiritual failure. It is what exhaustion and a heavy weight do to a mind in the dark, and it is a thing to tell somebody about tonight. Call or text 988, the crisis line. And tell one real person: a doctor, a pastor you trust, somebody who can sit with you.
Now the verse, because there is one that is specifically about lying down.
I will both lay me down in peace
David ends a short psalm about pressure with a sentence about going to sleep.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. (Psalm 4:8, King James Version)
Look at the word only.
Thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. Not mostly. Not along with my own vigilance. Only.
He is saying that his safekeeping has one source, and that it is not him, and that this is why he can stop being awake.
You have been kept by somebody who does not need you conscious to do it, and Psalm 4:8 says thou only makest me dwell in safety. The Holy Spirit is the one doing the keeping, and He has been doing it every night since the spring while a mind ran four figures.
Now the thing that will actually reach three in the morning.
The running is not useless for lack of skill. It is useless because it is a form of guarding, and guarding at three in the morning is duplicated work. Somebody is already awake.
The figures do not change between two and five. Nothing is being solved. What is happening is a woman standing watch over a thing that already has a watchman.
You are duplicating a watch somebody else is already keeping, and it is written that the LORD only makes a person dwell in safety. The Spirit of God is the one who has been keeping that house through every one of those hours, and Psalm 4 is where the only is written down.
And there is something in the first half of the verse worth noticing.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep. It is a decision. He says I will. It is not a description of a feeling he happens to have.
You have something you can decide rather than something you have to feel, and Scripture puts I will in front of the lying down. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a decision like that hold in the dark, and Psalm 4:8 shows a man under real pressure making it.
The scenes are not information
Let me be exact about the four o'clock scenes, because they have been getting treated as though they carry news.
They do not. A mind at three in the morning has no access to anything a mind at eleven in the morning does not have. It has the same four figures and less light and no other people in it.
What it does have is a missing brake. The part of a person that says that is not going to happen goes off duty around two, and everything after that runs unopposed.
So the scenes are not warnings and they are not premonitions. They are arithmetic with the brakes off.
You have been receiving no new information at all since the spring, and the written word puts safekeeping in God rather than in a woman's vigilance. The Spirit of God is the one who tells a person what those hours actually are, and He does it without any shame attached.
And the daytime version of you knows this. That is why there is embarrassment. But embarrassment is the wrong response, because a person cannot be blamed for what a mind does while unattended.
You are not answerable for what happens in your own head at three in the morning, and it is written that the peace and the sleeping are both given rather than earned. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present through the whole of it, and Psalm 4 has Him keeping watch while a man sleeps.
And the practical half. Take the actual figures to somebody qualified to look at them in daylight. An accountant. A financial counselor. Somebody whose job it is. A real picture in the afternoon does more to quiet three in the morning than any amount of thinking at three in the morning ever will.
You are able to move this into daylight where it can be handled, and Scripture never once required anybody to solve a thing in the dark on their own. The Spirit of God is the one who takes a woman to the right door, and Psalm 4:8 is why she can sleep before she gets there.
Feet on the floor, one verse, back to bed
So here is the thing to do, and it happens tonight when it starts.
Put your feet on the floor. Actually sit up. That breaks the physical shape of the thing.
Say Psalm 4:8 out loud once. You do not have to have it memorized; say it in your own words if that is easier. Thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
Then get back into bed and do not run the figures.
You are handing a watch over rather than trying to stop a thought, and Psalm 4:8 says the LORD only makes a person dwell in safety. The Spirit of God is the one who takes that watch, and He has been on it since the spring anyway.
The reason it has to be physical is that you cannot argue a mind out of running at three in the morning. Arguing is more running.
Feet on the floor is a different category. It is a body doing something, and a body doing something interrupts a loop in a way a thought never can.
You have been trying to think your way out of thinking, and the written word hands the whole thing to the one who does not sleep. The Holy Spirit is the one who holds a woman through the rest of that night, and Psalm 4 is where the handover is made.
Then get up at your usual time and go in and open.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman lying in the dark at three with four figures running.
You have been kept safe by somebody who does not sleep, and running the figures at three in the morning has never once been what was holding this together. Psalm 4:8 says thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been keeping that house through every hour since the spring.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are not answerable for what your own mind does while nobody is at the wheel, and no scene that arrives at four in the morning has ever been news. It is written that a person may both lay down in peace and sleep, and the Spirit of God is making that a decision available tonight rather than a feeling to wait for.
Feet on the floor. One line. Back to bed.
Declare this over yourself
- Four figures in the dark, you are not the thing holding this together. Psalm 4:8 says thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety, so by the Holy Spirit I put my feet on the floor tonight and say one line out loud, in the name of Jesus.
- Scenes that go further every month, you have no authority and you carry no news. The written word gives the peace and the sleeping both, and by the Holy Spirit I stop treating four in the morning as a source of information.
- Father, You have kept this house through every hour since the spring while I lay there guarding it. Your word says I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep, so by Your Spirit I hand You the watch, and I take the figures to somebody qualified in the daylight.
