What I SignedPsalm 139:12

I Stopped Opening The Envelopes

This message is for the man who has quietly stopped opening the paperwork altogether, and knows exactly what that says about where he is

You know exactly where they are.

That is the thing about this. It is not disorganization. You could put your hand on the drawer with your eyes shut, and you know roughly how many, and you know which month the oldest one is from.

You just do not open them.

It started with one. There was a week when everything was loud and one envelope sat on the counter for four days, and on the fifth day you put it in the drawer instead of opening it, and something in your chest went quiet for the first time in two weeks.

That was the mistake and you knew it was a mistake while you were doing it.

Now there are enough that opening them has become an event. It is not a five minute job any more. It is an afternoon, and it is an afternoon with something at the end of it that you cannot predict.

So it keeps not happening.

And here is the part that has actually started to weigh on you, and it is not the paperwork.

You have stopped praying properly.

Not entirely. You still pray in the car and you still pray about your children. But the honest, unedited kind has stopped, and it stopped around the same time as the drawer, and you have noticed the correlation.

Because a man who is avoiding one thing gets careful, and careful is not a posture a person can pray from.

There is a verse about darkness that is going to help, and it is not the one about being found out.

The darkness hideth not from thee

David writes about trying to get away from God and finds that the exits do not work.

Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. (Psalm 139:12, King James Version)

Both alike. That is the phrase.

Not: God can see in the dark if He looks harder. Both alike. There is no difference to Him between the lit room and the drawer.

You have not been in a place God cannot see into, and Psalm 139:12 says the darkness and the light are both alike to Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who has been fully present in that drawer for months, and He has never once had to strain to look.

Now the tone of the psalm matters here, because most people read this verse as a threat and it is not one.

Read what comes right after it. He goes straight into being knit together in the womb, and being wonderfully made, and the thoughts of God toward him being more in number than the sand.

That is not a man being cornered. That is a man discovering he cannot get anywhere God is not, and being relieved.

You are inside something that is relief rather than exposure, and it is written that the night shineth as the day to Him. The Spirit of God is the one who turns that from a threat into a comfort, and Psalm 139 does exactly that within a few lines.

And here is what that does to the praying.

The honest praying stopped because the drawer felt like a secret being kept. It is not one. There is nothing in that drawer God does not already hold in full light.

Which means the honest praying can start again this evening, before one envelope is opened, because there is nothing to disclose.

You are able to pray honestly tonight without opening a single thing first, and Scripture says the dark is not dark to Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who has been waiting for a man to work that out, and Psalm 139:12 is where it is written down.

Why it has to be with somebody

Let me be practical about the opening, because the instruction here is not simply do it.

The reason it keeps not happening is not laziness and it is not fear of arithmetic. It is that the afternoon has a shape you cannot control, and a man on his own in a bad afternoon is in a small room with something heavy.

So the answer is not more resolve. It is a second person in the room.

Ask somebody. Your wife, if that is right. A friend. Somebody who can sit at a table for two hours and not try to solve it.

You are not required to do the worst afternoon of the quarter on your own, and the written word never once asked a man to face a thing in isolation. The Spirit of God is the one who puts people beside each other for exactly this, and Psalm 139 has Him present in the dark part already.

And one plain thing, because this is the row on this site where it matters most. If the avoiding has taken your nights somewhere dark, and thoughts about not being here have begun to arrive, that is not a thing to carry silently. Call or text 988, the crisis line, tonight, and tell one real human being: a doctor, a pastor you trust, somebody who can sit with you.

You have never been meant to be the only one who knows how heavy the drawer has got, and it is written that the darkness and the light are both alike to Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who goes with a man into that call, and He is not learning anything new from it.

Then, once they are open, book time with somebody qualified to look at what is actually in them. An accountant. A financial counselor. Somebody whose job this is. Not for advice about the agreement, which is not something an article can give and not something to take from one either. For an accurate picture.

You are able to move from a drawer to a real picture inside one week, and the written word puts God in the dark place already rather than waiting at the end of it. The Spirit of God is the one who goes ahead into both rooms, and Psalm 139:12 is why the first one is not as dark as it looks.

One sitting, two people

So here is the thing to do.

Ask one person. Pick an afternoon. Put the whole drawer on a table and open every one of them in one sitting.

Do not sort them first. Do not open the ones you think are safe. Start at whichever end and go through.

You are ending an avoidance rather than facing a punishment, and Psalm 139:12 has God fully present in there already. The Holy Spirit is the one at that table, and He has read every one of them.

The reason it has to be one sitting is that a partial opening leaves a new drawer, and a new drawer starts the whole thing again on a smaller scale.

And the reason it has to be with somebody is that the moment you cannot predict is the moment you should not be alone for.

You have somewhere to be at the end of that afternoon that is not on your own, and it is written that the night is as the day to Him. The Spirit of God is the one who holds a man steady through two hours of paper, and Psalm 139 says He was in the room before anybody sat down.

Then you go in and open the building in the morning, and there is a real picture in the room now instead of a drawer.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who knows exactly where the drawer is.

You have not been hiding from God in that drawer, and the dark in there has never once been dark to Him. Psalm 139:12 says the darkness and the light are both alike to thee, and the Holy Spirit has been fully present in there since the fifth day of that loud week.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are able to pray honestly tonight before a single envelope is opened, and there has never been one thing in that drawer that needed disclosing. It is written that the night shineth as the day, and the Spirit of God is making that a relief rather than an exposure.

One sitting. Two people. All of them.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Drawer I have not opened since the spring, you are not a place God cannot see. Psalm 139:12 says the darkness and the light are both alike to thee, so by the Holy Spirit I ask one person to sit with me and I open all of them, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Careful praying that started the same two weeks, you have no reason to continue. The written word says the night shineth as the day, and by the Holy Spirit I pray honestly tonight before one envelope is opened.
  3. Father, You have been in that drawer since the fifth day of that week and You never had to strain to look. Your word says the darkness hideth not from thee, so by Your Spirit I put the whole thing on a table, and I book the appointment.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
