What I SignedGalatians 6:2

My Husband Signed And I Am Carrying It

This message is for the wife who did not put her hand to the page and is inside the weight of it every day, with nowhere to say that without it sounding like blame

Your name is not on it.

That is a fact and it has never once helped. His name is on it, and the two of you are one household with one set of accounts and one front door, and the weight of it arrives in this kitchen every day the same as it arrives anywhere.

You did not go to the meetings. You said yes, and you meant the yes, and you have never taken it back.

But you did not sit in the room and hear the numbers, and there is a whole afternoon of somebody's life that you were not present for, and everything since has been downstream of it.

Here is the sentence you have been holding for two years.

It is not: you should not have signed it. You do not think that and you would never say it.

It is much smaller and much harder. It is: I am carrying this too and nobody has ever asked me how it is going.

That is the whole sentence, and it has never once been said out loud, because every version of it you have rehearsed comes out sounding like an accusation, and he is already carrying more than one man should.

So you say nothing and you make dinner and you handle the parts of it that reach the house.

And you have started to be tired in a way that has nowhere to go.

Bear ye one another's burdens

Paul writes a short instruction that assumes something about how burdens actually work.

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2, King James Version)

One another's. Not your own. The whole instruction is built on the assumption that a burden can be picked up by a person it does not belong to.

Which means Scripture already knows what you have been trying to explain to yourself for two years. A weight can be fully on somebody whose name is not on it.

You have been carrying a burden that Scripture assumes will be carried by more than the one it belongs to, and Galatians 6:2 makes that the ordinary shape rather than an intrusion. The Holy Spirit is the one who put that instruction in the book, and He was not describing an exception when He did.

Now look at what the verse does not do, because that is what will free your mouth.

It does not say the burden gets transferred. Both people are under it. Nobody is relieved. The word is bear, which means carry, and it takes two backs.

You are not a bystander to a thing with his name on it, and it is written that burdens are borne by one another rather than by their owner alone. The Spirit of God is the one who arranged it that way, and Galatians 6 says so plainly.

And here is the part that matters for the sentence you have been holding.

If you are genuinely carrying it, then how it is going for you is real information, and real information is not an accusation. It is a fact about one of the two people under the weight.

You have something true to say that is not a complaint about anybody, and Scripture treats the second carrier as a real carrier. The Holy Spirit is the one who separates a true sentence from an accusation, and He can tell the difference even when your ear cannot.

Why every rehearsal comes out wrong

Let me name the mechanism, because two years of rehearsing has taught you the wrong lesson.

Every version comes out as blame for one reason: there has been a solution attached to the end of it every single time.

I am carrying this too, and so we should look at the numbers together. I am carrying this too, and so you need to tell me things.

The moment a sentence has a therefore in it, it becomes a request, and a request about a thing a man already feels he failed at lands as an accusation no matter how gently it is said.

You have been failing at the wrong task, and the written word calls for the bearing rather than for the fixing. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a person that a true sentence does not have to arrive with a demand attached, and Galatians 6:2 asks for carrying rather than solving.

So take the therefore off.

I am carrying this too. That is the whole sentence. Nothing after it. No request, no plan, no proposal about what either of you does next.

He will not be able to hear it as blame, because there is nothing in it to comply with.

You are able to say the true thing without asking him for one thing, and it is written that burdens are borne together rather than negotiated. The Holy Spirit is the one who will be in the kitchen when it is said, and Galatians 6 is where the shape of it comes from.

And one plain thing, because this row is the heaviest on this site. If it has got to the place where you have lain awake thinking about not being here, that is not something to carry silently: call or text 988, the crisis line, tonight, and tell one real person, a doctor or a pastor you trust. And if what either of you needs is an accurate picture of the numbers, that is a job for somebody qualified to read them rather than for two people at a kitchen table at midnight.

You have never been meant to be the only one who knows how heavy it has got, and the written word tells people to bear it one with another. The Spirit of God is the one who goes with a woman into that phone call, and Galatians 6:2 is why she does not have to make it alone.

One sentence, no therefore

So here is the thing to do, and it is one sentence, and it is this week.

Say to him: I am carrying this too.

Then stop. Do not fill the silence. Do not soften it. Do not add what you want him to do about it.

You are handing him a fact rather than a request, and Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens without any mention of a remedy. The Spirit of God is the one who does what happens after the sentence, and He does not need it explained.

The reason to stop talking is that the silence afterward is where he gets to be a man carrying something with his wife instead of a man being asked about a failure.

That silence may be twenty seconds long and it may be uncomfortable and it will not be the worst twenty seconds of the last two years.

You are able to trust a silence you did not fill, and it is written that the law of Christ is fulfilled in the bearing rather than in the arranging. The Holy Spirit is the one who works in a room after a true sentence has been said, and He has been waiting two years for that room.

Then go on doing what you do in that house, and the obligation is exactly where it was.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has held one sentence for two years.

You have been inside this from the first day, and never having signed it has never once meant you are outside what it costs. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens, which assumes a weight lands on somebody whose name is not on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who wrote that as the ordinary shape of things.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are carrying this with him and not behind him, and the written word never once asked the second carrier to be silent about the weight. It is written that the law of Christ is fulfilled in the bearing of one another's burdens, and the Spirit of God is making that a real thing at a kitchen sink rather than an idea about marriage.

One sentence. No therefore.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Absence of my name on that page, you are not the measure of what I carry. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens, so by the Holy Spirit I say one true sentence to my husband this week with nothing after it, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that saying it would land as blame, you have no right to my mouth any longer. The written word asks for bearing rather than for fixing, and by the Holy Spirit I take the therefore off and say the plain thing.
  3. Father, You have never once treated me as somebody standing outside this. Your word says bear ye one another's burdens and so the law of Christ is kept, so by Your Spirit I speak the true sentence, and I let the silence be as long as it is.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
