It is about eleven inches.
That is genuinely the size of it. The pattern says one thing goes there, and in your room it goes about eleven inches to the left, because there is a post in the wrong place and nobody who wrote the pattern has ever seen that post.
You moved it in your first spring. Nobody told you to. You did it because a person kept catching their sleeve and one day it was going to be worse than a sleeve.
Nothing has gone wrong since. That is four years.
And every so often, without warning, you get a cold feeling about it.
It comes when somebody official is in the building. It comes when a message arrives with a formal tone. It came last month when a form asked a question that was not even about that, and you read the question four times.
The cold feeling has a sentence in it and the sentence is: what if this counts.
You would answer honestly if anybody asked. You have always said that to yourself. But nobody has asked, and four years is a long time to be holding a small thing you have never been asked about.
And now the real trouble, which is not about the eleven inches at all.
You have started to wonder what kind of woman you are. Whether a person who does this is careful, or whether a person who does this is the kind who will eventually do something bigger and tell herself a story about it.
That question is the one to answer, and it has an answer.
The integrity of the upright shall guide them
There is a proverb about integrity, and the striking thing is what integrity is said to do.
The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. (Proverbs 11:3, King James Version)
Integrity guides. It is not a scoreboard. It is not a verdict handed down at the end.
It is a thing that operates while a person is walking, showing them where to put the next foot.
You have integrity working in you right now, and Proverbs 11:3 describes it as something that guides rather than something that grades. The Holy Spirit is the one who does that guiding, and He has been doing it in you for four years including the day you moved it.
Sit with that, because it turns the cold feeling inside out.
The cold feeling has been read as evidence against you. As a verdict arriving in installments. But a guide does not produce cold feelings about nothing. A guide produces attention.
You are being guided rather than accused, and Scripture puts integrity in the role of the one who leads a person forward. The Spirit of God is the one who raises a question in somebody who wants to be clean, and it is written in Proverbs 11 that this is what integrity does.
Now look at the contrast in the second half of the verse, because the contrast tells you what you are not.
Perverseness of transgressors. That is a person going crooked on purpose, and the mark of it is that no question ever arises. The crooked path does not generate a cold feeling. That is the whole danger of it.
You have been asking the question for four years, and the written word puts that asking on the opposite side of the verse from the person it is warning about. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a question alive in somebody, and He does not keep questions alive in people He has given up on.
Care and concealment are different acts
Let me separate two things, because they have been fused together for four years.
Care is doing something because a person kept catching their sleeve. Care has a reason you could say out loud in one sentence to anybody.
Concealment is different. Concealment is arranging for a thing not to be found. It requires effort, and it grows, and it has to be maintained.
Look at what you have actually done. You moved something eleven inches for a plain reason, and then you did nothing else. There is no maintenance. There is no arrangement. If somebody stood in the room and looked at the post, they would see the whole story.
You have done one act and not the second one, and it is written that integrity is what guides the upright along the way. The Spirit of God is the one who can tell those two apart in a woman, and Proverbs 11:3 keeps them on opposite sides.
But there is one thing that has quietly turned into concealment, and it is not the eleven inches.
It is the four years of never saying it out loud to anybody. That silence started as nothing and has become a small structure of its own, and the cold feeling is the maintenance cost.
You are paying for a silence rather than for a change, and the written word offers a guide instead of a hiding place. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person which part is actually costing them, and He does it without any accusation in it.
Say it once, and ask straight
So here are two things and they are both small.
First, say it out loud to one person who is allowed to hear it. One of your own people. Your sister. Somebody who does the same kind of work elsewhere.
Say it in one sentence with the reason in it. There is a post in the wall, so that goes eleven inches over.
You are taking the cost out of the silence rather than making a disclosure, and Proverbs 11:3 has integrity guiding you toward daylight rather than away from it. The Spirit of God is the one who receives that sentence, and He has known it for four years.
Second, and this is the honest one. If what you actually want to know is whether the change is permitted under what you signed, that is not a question any article can answer and it is not a question to keep carrying.
Book twenty minutes with somebody qualified to read the paperwork and ask them straight. Let them tell you. Then you will know, and knowing is better than four years of a cold feeling in the chest.
You are allowed to have that settled, and the written word never once asked anybody to live under a question that a competent person could answer. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person permission to go and find out, and Proverbs 11 puts integrity in the business of guiding rather than of enduring.
Then you open the room in the morning and put the thing eleven inches to the left, or wherever you have been told to put it, and neither one of those makes you a different woman.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who reads a formal message four times.
You have not become a dishonest woman over eleven inches of difference, and integrity has never once been a thing you were failing while you were asking about it. Proverbs 11:3 says the integrity of the upright shall guide them, which makes it a guide rather than a verdict, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been doing that guiding since the first spring.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are on the asking side of that verse, and the written word puts the person who never asks on the other side of it entirely. It is written that integrity guides while perverseness destroys, and the Spirit of God is making that a settled fact in a woman rather than a thing she has to keep proving.
Say it once. Then go and ask straight.
Declare this over yourself
- Cold feeling in my chest, you are not a verdict on this woman. Proverbs 11:3 says integrity shall guide the upright, so by the Holy Spirit I say it out loud to one person tonight and book time with somebody qualified, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear about what kind of woman does this, you have no evidence and no standing. The written word puts the one who asks on the opposite side from the one who goes crooked, and by the Holy Spirit I stop reading my own care as a warning about myself.
- Father, You have been guiding me since the spring I moved it, and You have never once been grading me for it. Your word says the integrity of the upright shall guide them, so by Your Spirit I go and ask straight, and I open the room in the morning.
