I Complain About It In Front Of My People

It came out of your mouth on a Tuesday afternoon.

You were tired and something had come down from somewhere that made no sense, and you said, to the room, that this is what happens when people who have never stood in a room like this get to decide what happens in it.

You meant it. It was not a lie, and it was not even unfair.

And then you looked up and there was a nineteen year old with a box in her hands and her face had changed.

Not shocked. Something worse than shocked. Adjusted. She had heard something and put it away somewhere, and you watched her do it.

She has been here five weeks. She is good. She works like somebody who has decided this matters, which is rare, and you had spent five weeks quietly hoping she would stay.

And on Tuesday you handed her a way of seeing the place, and she took it, because she is nineteen and you are the one who runs it.

You have thought about it every day since.

Now here is the trap, and you are already in it. You have started to conclude that you are the problem in that building. That the thing weighing on your team is not the pattern, it is you.

That conclusion is too big and it is not true, and it is going to stop you doing the one small thing that would actually help.

To the use of edifying

There is a verse in Ephesians about speech, and the measure it uses is not the one people expect.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (Ephesians 4:29, King James Version)

The test is not accuracy. That is the thing to notice.

It does not say let nothing untrue proceed out of your mouth. What you said on Tuesday was true. The measure here is what a sentence does when it arrives.

Unto the hearers. It is a verse about the landing, not the launching.

You have been measuring that sentence for truth when Scripture measures it for landing, and Ephesians 4:29 puts the whole test on what reaches the hearer. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person the difference, and He showed it to you on Tuesday when you looked up.

That is why the look on her face registered so hard. You already knew this verse in your body before you could have quoted it.

You are somebody who felt it land wrong the second it happened, and the written word makes that instinct the actual standard rather than a delicate conscience. The Spirit of God is the one who put that response in you, and it is written in Ephesians 4 what it is for.

Now the other half, which is the release.

Minister grace unto the hearers. Grace is a supply. Something is being handed over. The verse is not asking for silence and it is not asking for a positive attitude.

It is asking whether the person you spoke to came away with more to stand on or less.

You have a very clear measure to work with, and it is written that speech is for the use of edifying rather than for the recording of facts. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a workable thing on a Tuesday rather than an ideal, and Ephesians 4:29 is where it is set out.

What she actually took home

Let me be exact about what happened, because the vagueness is what has been letting you punish yourself.

You did not tell her the place was bad. You did not tell her to be cynical. You said one true and tired sentence in a room.

What she took from it was smaller and more specific than a worldview. She took this: the person in charge here is carrying something she cannot do anything about, and there is nowhere to put it.

That is what a young person actually hears in a sentence like that. Not the content. The lack of a floor.

You have handed her an accurate picture with no floor under it, and Scripture puts the whole weight on what is left in the hearer's hands. The Spirit of God is the one who can show you exactly what was received, and He is not doing it to condemn anybody.

And that is fixable, because the missing thing is not an apology.

If you go to her and apologize, she will be embarrassed and it will make the moment larger. What she needs is not for the sentence to be taken back. She heard something real and she is not stupid.

What she needs is the floor. One sentence that tells her what a person does in here with a thing they cannot change.

You are able to put the floor back in about eleven words, and the written word aims speech at what the hearer is left holding. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes eleven words do that much, and Ephesians 4 says that is what speech is for.

Give her something to stand on

So here is the thing to do this week.

Find her. Not a meeting. Standing up, in the middle of something else, the way real things get said.

And say one plain honest sentence with a floor in it. Something like: that thing on Tuesday, some of it comes down from a long way off and we run it properly anyway, and that is the job, and it is good having you here.

That is it. Do not explain. Do not apologize. Do not undo the true part.

You are handing somebody a way to stand rather than taking a sentence back, and Ephesians 4:29 measures speech by whether grace was ministered to the one who heard it. The Spirit of God is the one who carries eleven words further than they should go, and He does that with a young person especially.

The reason it works is that she is not confused about the facts. She is nineteen and she can see the building. What she does not have yet is a picture of a grown adult carrying something that will not move and staying warm anyway.

Give her that picture once and it will do more than five weeks of being careful in front of her.

You have something to give her that nobody else in that building can give, and it is written that words are for the use of edifying the hearers. The Holy Spirit is the one who has been keeping her in that room for five weeks, and Ephesians 4:29 is the shape of what to hand her.

Then go on running the pattern the way you run it, including the parts that come down from a long way off.
