The ManualPhilippians 3:7

I Had My Own Way Of Doing This

This message is for the woman who came in from a trade with methods of her own and has spent two years unlearning them, and grieves a skill nobody will see again

You came in knowing how to do it.

That is the thing that never gets said out loud in a place like this. Some people arrive and learn the work here. You arrived with the work already in your hands, learned somewhere else, over eleven years, from a woman who is dead now.

And you have spent two years taking it back out again.

Not all of it. But the good parts. The parts that were yours. The sequence you worked out that nobody taught you. The small correction you used to make with your thumb that saved about four seconds and about a third of the mistakes.

None of that survives here. The pattern has its own sequence and its own way, and both of them are fine, and neither of them is yours.

So now your hands do it the way it is written, and they do it well, and something you built over eleven years is simply gone out of the world.

Nobody knows. That is the strange part. There is nobody in that building you could tell, because to them you are somebody who does the work properly, and they have never seen the other version.

Last month you caught yourself starting to do the thumb thing and stopping. Two years and it still surfaces.

And you stood there with your hand half raised and thought: nobody will ever see that again.

Let me say the honest thing about that, because the honest thing is better than the comforting one.

That is a loss. An actual one. And there is a man in the New Testament who knew exactly what to do with a loss like that, and what he did was not pretend it was nothing.

What things were gain to me

Paul writes about his own past and uses an accounting word on purpose.

But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. (Philippians 3:7, King James Version)

Counted. That is a ledger word. He is doing arithmetic.

And notice what he does not say. He does not say those things were worthless. He does not say he was wrong to have had them, or that they were never really gain in the first place.

He says they were gain. He is honest about the value before he writes the entry.

You have something that was genuinely gain, and Philippians 3:7 lets a person name the value of a thing before setting it down. The Holy Spirit is the one who allows an honest ledger, and He has never asked anybody to pretend a real thing was nothing.

Let me be exact about one thing, because it would be easy to misuse this verse here.

Nobody is telling you that God required your methods of you, or that giving them up was some kind of obedience. That is not what happened. What happened is an arrangement with a pattern in it, and you signed it, and that is a commercial fact rather than a spiritual demand.

You are not being asked to call an ordinary loss a sacrifice, and Scripture never once required anybody to spiritualize a plain fact. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps the account accurate, and it is written in Philippians 3 that Paul was accurate about what things had been.

What is on offer is the counting. And the counting is the part that actually helps.

An uncounted loss keeps presenting itself for payment. It comes up at odd moments, half raised hands, a thumb that starts to move. It has never been entered anywhere so it keeps arriving at the door.

You have been carrying an unentered loss, and the written word puts a number on the thing before it moves on. The Holy Spirit is the one who does that with a person, and Philippians 3:7 is the shape of it.

The eleven years did not go anywhere

Here is the second thing, and it is about what a skill actually is.

It has been sitting in your head as a technique. A sequence, a thumb, four seconds. And the technique is gone, that part is true.

But eleven years with a woman who knew what she was doing did not produce a technique. It produced a person who can see a thing going wrong before it goes wrong, and that faculty is not written in any sequence.

You still have it. You use it forty times a day. It is why you are good at this even doing it a way you did not invent.

You have kept the whole faculty even though the sequence went, and it is written that Paul counted a loss without losing what the years had made of him. The Spirit of God is the one who did the making, and He did not lose it in the transfer.

And there is a plainer thing under that.

She taught you. That woman. She is dead now and she is not gone out of the world, because the way she watched a thing is in your hands every single day whatever sequence they are running.

You are carrying somebody forward whether or not the thumb survives, and Scripture is careful to say the gain was real rather than pretending it evaporated. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps what a person was taught, and Philippians 3 makes room for that to be honestly counted rather than denied.

Say it out loud once

So here is the thing to do and it takes twenty seconds.

Say out loud one thing your hands used to do that nobody here will ever see. Describe it properly. The thumb. The four seconds. What it prevented.

Then say how long it took you to learn it, and who taught you.

You are entering something in a ledger rather than complaining about it, and Philippians 3:7 shows a man doing exactly that in writing. The Spirit of God is the one who receives the entry, and He watched the eleven years it took.

The reason it has to be described properly is that a vague loss cannot be counted. Gone is not a number. The thumb and the four seconds and the eleven years and her name, that is a number.

Counted once, it stops arriving at the door. It does not stop being a loss. It stops being unfinished business.

You have been carrying unfinished business rather than an open wound, and the written word finishes it by naming what the thing was worth. The Holy Spirit is the one who closes it, and Philippians 3:7 is where the closing is written down.

Then you go in and run the sequence as written, with a faculty in your hands that no pattern anywhere gave you.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing with her hand half raised.

You have not lost the years that taught you, and a skill nobody will see again has never once stopped being a real thing that you have. Philippians 3:7 counts a genuine gain as a genuine gain before writing the entry, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps the whole faculty when a sequence goes.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are still carrying the woman who taught you into that building every morning, and no pattern anywhere has ever been able to take that out of your hands. It is written that what things were gain were counted honestly, and the Spirit of God is making that a settled entry rather than an unfinished ache.

Describe it once. Use her name.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Skill nobody here will ever see again, you are not gone out of me. My trade did not evaporate. Philippians 3:7 says what things were gain to me, those I counted loss, so by the Holy Spirit I describe it out loud tonight and say her name, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Ache that keeps arriving at the door, you have no claim on an unfinished thing any more. The written word puts a number on it and enters it, and by the Holy Spirit I count what it cost and I keep going.
  3. Father, You watched every one of those eleven years and You did not lose one of them. Your word says those things I counted loss, so by Your Spirit I name what my hands used to do, and I go in and run it as written.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
