I Am Sixty One And I Signed For Ten Years

You were going to stop at sixty-five.

That was never written anywhere. It was a number in your head from when you were about thirty and it sat there quietly for three decades doing no harm.

And then you signed a term, and the term runs to a year that has a different number in it, and you did the subtraction in the parking lot afterward.

Seventy-one.

You did not tell anybody you had done the subtraction. Your wife knows the year the term ends because it is on the paperwork. She has not, as far as you know, worked out what age that makes you.

Here is the thing you cannot get a grip on.

It is not the work. You can work. Right now, today, you can do a longer day than two of the young ones and everybody in that building knows it.

It is that you do not know what you will be able to do at sixty-eight, and neither does anybody, and there is a signature holding a decade you cannot see into.

That is a particular kind of fear and nobody talks about it. There is a lot written for a young man signing something. There is nothing at all written for a man of sixty-one who has.

And you have not said it out loud once, because saying it would mean admitting that a number in your head from thirty years ago has been quietly demolished.

There is a verse that speaks to the far end of a life directly, and it is more specific than you expect.

Even to hoar hairs will I carry you

Isaiah writes a sentence that does something unusual: it addresses old age by name.

And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you. (Isaiah 46:4, King James Version)

Count how many times the carrying is said. Four separate ways in one verse. I will bear. I will carry. Even I will carry.

Scripture does not repeat like that by accident. It repeats when it knows a person will need to hear it more than once in the same breath.

You have been addressed by name at exactly the age you are frightened of, and Isaiah 46:4 says even to your old age I am he rather than leaving it general. The Holy Spirit is the one who put an age-specific promise into the book, and He put it there for the man doing subtraction in a parking lot.

Now the first half of the verse, because it is the part that reaches the actual fear.

I have made, and I will bear. The making and the bearing are the same person. The one who put you together is the one who takes the weight of what He made.

That is not a general comfort about God being kind. It is an argument. He is not going to abandon the work of His own hands at the far end of it.

You are the work of somebody who does not walk away from what He has made, and Scripture puts the making and the bearing in the same sentence. The Spirit of God is the one who has been doing the bearing since long before there was a term or a signature, and Isaiah 46 is where He says how far it goes.

And notice what the verse does not say.

It does not say the years will be easy. It does not say a man at sixty-eight will be able to do what he does at sixty-one. It makes no promise at all about capacity.

It promises carrying. Which is what a person needs when capacity is the exact thing in question.

You have been promised the carrying rather than the capacity, and it is written I will bear rather than you will be strong. The Holy Spirit is the one who does the actual carrying, and Isaiah 46:4 never once made it conditional on what a body can still do.

The number in your head was not a covenant

Let me deal with sixty-five, because that number is doing more damage than the term is.

It was never a plan. It was an assumption that formed in a thirty year old head with no information in it, and it has been sitting there ever since being treated as a fact.

You have been grieving the loss of it as though something was taken. But nothing was taken. A number in a young man's head was revised by a decision the older version of him made with his eyes open.

You have lost an assumption rather than a promise, and the written word never once handed anybody a fixed date to retire on. The Spirit of God is the one who can tell those apart, and He is not asking you to pretend the assumption did not matter.

And there is one more thing, and it is practical rather than spiritual.

You do not know what sixty-eight looks like. Nobody does. But a decade is not one long unbroken thing; it is a series of years, and each of them gets decided in its own time, and there will be information at sixty-five that does not exist now.

What you cannot do is carry ten unknown years all at once tonight. Nobody could. That is not faith failing; that is arithmetic being asked to do something it cannot.

You are not required to carry a decade in one evening, and Scripture promises the carrying year by year to the very end. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes the whole ten off a man and hands him back the one he is in, and Isaiah 46 is where the promise runs to the end of the line.

And one plain thing, because this is the heaviest row on this site. If the nights have taken you somewhere dark, and thoughts about not being here have started arriving, that is not something to carry alone. Call or text 988, the crisis line, tonight, and tell one real person: a doctor, a pastor you trust, somebody who can sit with you. And for the paperwork itself, take it to somebody qualified to read it, because an accurate picture beats another year of subtraction in a parking lot.

You have never been meant to be the only one who knows how heavy this has got, and it is written that He carries even to the far end. The Spirit of God is the one who goes with a man into that call, and Isaiah 46:4 is why he does not make it on his own.

Say the two numbers out loud

So here is the thing to do, and it takes about fifteen seconds.

Say your age out loud. Then say the year the term ends. Then say what age that makes you.

Sixty-one. That year. Seventy-one.

Then say plainly: I am not carrying these years by myself.

You are putting a number down rather than carrying it silently, and Isaiah 46:4 addresses old age by name rather than skirting it. The Spirit of God is the one who receives it, and He is not surprised by any of the three numbers.

The reason it has to be out loud is that the subtraction has only ever happened in your head in a parking lot, and a thing that lives only in a man's head at sixty-one grows in the dark.

Said out loud, it becomes an ordinary fact about a life. Ordinary facts can be lived with. Undisclosed arithmetic cannot.

You have been carrying a number nobody has ever heard, and the written word says even to hoar hairs will I carry you. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes it off a man the moment he says it, and Isaiah 46 is the whole warrant for saying it.

Then tell your wife, and go in and open in the morning.
