What I SignedEphesians 4:25

I Cannot Tell My Parents

This message is for the woman whose family put in the deposit and still believe it is going well, who has been managing their picture of it for two years

They put in the deposit.

Not all of it. Enough that the number matters in their house, and enough that your father moved something around to do it, and he has never once mentioned that and never will.

They think it is going well.

They think that because you have told them it is going well, in about a hundred and four Sunday phone calls over two years, each of which contained something true.

That is the part nobody understands from the outside. You have not lied to them. You have selected. You have told them the good thing that happened on Thursday and not the shape of the month.

And now it has been two years of selecting, and the picture in their heads has drifted so far from the actual thing that you cannot get from one to the other in a phone call.

There is a specific moment you keep thinking about. Your mother said something in April about how proud your father is when he tells people.

You said thank you. You got off the phone and sat in the car for a while.

So here is where you actually are. It is not guilt about lying, because you have not lied. It is that you have been maintaining something, and maintaining it has become a job, and the job has been running for two years.

That is what this is about, and there is a verse that ends it.

Speak every man truth

Paul writes about speech in a way that is not primarily about honesty.

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. (Ephesians 4:25, King James Version)

Look at the reason he gives at the end. For we are members one of another.

That is not a moral argument. It is an anatomical one. The reason to speak truth is that these people are joined to you, and a body that keeps information from one of its own parts is not being kind to it.

You have been keeping something from people you are joined to, and Ephesians 4:25 gives membership rather than morality as the reason to speak. The Holy Spirit is the one who put that reason in the verse, and it lands very differently from an accusation about lying.

That reframes the whole thing, because the fear has been about what telling them would do.

Two people have been protected from worry. That is a real motive and it is a loving one, and Paul is not calling it lying.

What he is saying is that they are part of this, and a part that is not told is a part that cannot act, cannot pray, and cannot be with you in it.

You are joined to them whether or not they know the figures, and Scripture makes that joining the reason the truth gets spoken. The Spirit of God is the one who arranged people into that kind of body, and it is written in Ephesians 4 why it matters.

And there is a thing about your father in it that is worth saying.

He moved something to do this. He carries the fact that he did. He tells people. That means he is already in it, at cost, and he has been in it from the beginning.

You have not been protecting a man who is outside this, and the written word says members one of another rather than one and his onlookers. The Holy Spirit is the one who sees exactly where each person in that family is standing, and He knows your father is not standing outside.

What the managing is costing you

Let me name the price, because it has been getting paid for two years without anybody adding it up.

Every Sunday call now requires preparation. Which subjects are safe. A story ready. A hand on the wheel the whole way through.

That is a job. It takes energy on the one afternoon of the week when there is not much left.

And there is something worse in it, which is that you have started to be slightly absent from your own parents. Not distant. Absent, in the sense that the person on the phone is a managed version.

You have been on those calls as somebody's careful representative, and it is written that truth is spoken because these people are members one of another. The Spirit of God is the one who wants you actually present in your own family, and Ephesians 4:25 is where the door out is.

And the cost of the eventual telling grows every week. That is the arithmetic nobody mentions.

Two years of a picture is a large thing to correct. Three years is larger. The kindest version of this conversation is the one that happens soonest, and it will never again be as small as it is today.

You are able to end a two year job in one afternoon, and the written word never once asked anybody to hold a shape together on their own. The Holy Spirit is the one who goes into that front room ahead of a person, and He is already there.

And one plain thing, because this is the row where it matters most. If the weight of it has taken your nights somewhere dark, and thoughts about not being here have started to arrive, that is not something to carry silently: call or text 988, the crisis line, tonight, and tell one real human being, a doctor or a pastor you trust. And if what is actually needed is a clear picture of the numbers, that is a job for somebody qualified to read them.

You have never been meant to be the only person who knows how heavy this is, and Scripture puts truth between members of one body rather than inside one of them. The Spirit of God is the one who goes with a woman into that phone call, and Ephesians 4 is why she does not have to make it alone.

Three sentences, no plan

So here is the thing to do, and it is an afternoon, and it is three sentences.

Drive over. Sit down. Say the real shape of it in three plain sentences.

It has been harder than I have told you. The numbers are not what they were meant to be. I did not want you worrying and I have been managing what you knew.

Then stop. Do not attach a plan. Do not tell them what you are going to do about it, because you may not know, and a plan invites them to evaluate it.

You are handing them the truth rather than a proposal, and Ephesians 4:25 asks for the speaking rather than for the solving. The Spirit of God is the one who does what happens in that room after three sentences, and He does not need it managed.

Your mother will cry, probably, and that is not a catastrophe. Your father will go quiet and then ask one practical question, and you can say you do not know, and that is a complete answer.

What will happen afterward is that Sunday afternoons will become easy again, and you will not have known how heavy they were until they are not.

You have been carrying something a family is designed to carry between them, and it is written that we are members one of another. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that real in a front room, and Ephesians 4:25 is the whole instruction.

Then you go back and open in the morning, and the obligation is exactly where it was.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman sitting in a car outside her own house.

You have not been lying to your parents, and two years of protecting them has never once made you a dishonest daughter. Ephesians 4:25 gives the reason as we are members one of another, which is a fact about a body rather than a charge against a person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who joined the four of you like that in the first place.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are able to put down a two year job in a single afternoon, and no picture anybody is holding was ever yours alone to maintain. It is written that truth is spoken between members of one body, and the Spirit of God is making that a real drive on a real Tuesday rather than a principle about honesty.

Three sentences. No plan.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Picture in my parents' heads, you are not mine to maintain any longer. Ephesians 4:25 says speak every man truth, for we are members one of another, so by the Holy Spirit I drive over this week and say three plain sentences, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of what the telling would do to them, you have no right to another Sunday. The written word makes them members of the same body rather than onlookers, and by the Holy Spirit I stop protecting people who are already in it.
  3. Father, You joined the four of us together before any of this was signed. Your word says we are members one of another, so by Your Spirit I sit down in their front room, and I say the true shape of it with no plan attached.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
