There are two sheets and you keep them in the same drawer.
One of them is three years old. It has a column of figures on it and every one of those figures is a projection, and you looked at that sheet more times than you have looked at any other piece of paper in your life.
The other one is this month.
They have never met. Not once in three years have those two columns come anywhere near each other, and you have watched the distance between them the way a man watches weather.
You are doing the work. That is the thing that makes it hard to talk about. There is no version of this where somebody could look at your building and tell you what you are doing wrong.
You open early. Your people stay. The customers who come, come back.
And the second sheet is what it is.
Here is what this piece is actually about, and it is not the numbers.
It is that in three years you have never said the real figure out loud to a single human being.
Not your wife, who knows it is tight and does not know the shape of it. Not your friend, who asks how it is going and gets a version. Not anybody.
The true version of this lives entirely inside one head, and it has lived there long enough that you have started to think that is normal.
It is not normal, and there is a verse that opens a door.
Pour out your heart before him
David writes this from an unstable position, and the instruction in the middle of it is physical.
Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. (Psalm 62:8, King James Version)
Pour out. Not report. Not summarize.
Pouring is what a man does when he tips a container over and does not stop until it is empty. There is no editing in a pour. Whatever is in there comes out in the order it comes out.
You have been invited to empty the whole container rather than to give an account of it, and Psalm 62:8 says pour out rather than present. The Holy Spirit is the one who receives what comes out in that condition, and He has never once needed it arranged first.
Now hold that against three years of a version.
Every time somebody has asked how it is going, what comes out is a summary. A shaped, considerate, honest-enough sentence that protects them and protects the man saying it.
That is not lying. That is what a man does. But a man who has been summarizing for three years has never once emptied the container, and containers that are never emptied do not stay the same.
You have been giving out summaries and holding the pour, and it is written that the invitation is to pour out the heart before Him. The Spirit of God is the one who has been standing there through three years of summaries without pressing, and Psalm 62 is where the invitation stands.
And look at where the pouring goes. Before Him. Not before the people asking.
There is nothing here telling you to go and be raw with your friend. The place for the whole unedited thing is God, and He is described in the same breath as a refuge, which is a place a man goes when the outside is not safe.
You have a room that is actually safe for the whole of it, and the written word calls Him a refuge in the same sentence as the pouring. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that room real rather than theoretical, and Psalm 62:8 is the door.
What three years of holding it does
Let me be honest about the cost, because it has been half noticed already and put aside.
A number held alone for three years stops being a number. It becomes a fact about a person. It moves out of the drawer and into a man's own sense of what kind of man he is.
That is why you cannot say it. Not because of what anybody would do with the figure. Because saying it out loud would be saying something about yourself.
You have let a figure become a verdict, and Scripture treats the contents of a heart as something to be poured rather than as evidence. The Spirit of God is the one who takes an arithmetic problem back out of a man's identity, and He does it without any accusation.
There is a second cost and it is closer to the surface.
You are alone in this in a very specific way. Not unloved. Not unsupported. Alone in the sense that no other human being is holding an accurate picture with you, and there is a kind of tiredness that only comes from that.
You were never designed to be the only holder of an accurate picture, and it is written that the people are told to pour out rather than to hold. The Holy Spirit is the one who ends that particular kind of alone, and Psalm 62 puts the ending of it inside a single instruction.
And one plain thing, because this is the row on this site where it matters most. If three years of holding it has taken the nights somewhere dark, and thoughts about not being here have started arriving, that is not a thing to hold on your own either. Call or text 988, the crisis line, tonight, and tell one real human being: a doctor, a pastor you trust, somebody who can sit with you.
You have never been meant to be the only one who knows how heavy this is, and the written word says pour it out rather than carry it sealed. The Spirit of God is the one who goes with a man into that phone call, and Psalm 62:8 is why he does not have to make it alone.
Say both numbers out loud
So here are two things, and they are small and they are this week.
First, say both numbers out loud. To God. On your own, in a truck or a back room, with the drawer open if that helps.
The projection, and the real one. Say them in that order. Then say whatever comes after them without shaping it.
You are pouring rather than reporting, and Psalm 62:8 asks for exactly that and calls Him a refuge in the same line. The Spirit of God is the one who receives it in whatever condition it arrives, and He is not going to flinch.
Second, and this is the practical one. Book time with somebody qualified to look at the real sheet properly. An accountant. A financial counselor. Somebody whose job this is.
Not for advice about what to do with the agreement. For an accurate picture, held by more than one person. Three years of looking at a column alone does not produce accuracy; it produces familiarity, and those are different things.
You have been carrying a picture nobody has checked, and the written word never once required a man to be the only one holding what he holds. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a man to the right door, and Psalm 62 is where the pouring is commanded rather than suggested.
Then you go and open in the morning, and you do the work, which by every account you are already doing well.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man with two sheets in the same drawer.
You have a place to pour the whole of it out tonight, and the gap between those two sheets has never once been a gap between you and God. Psalm 62:8 says pour out your heart before him and calls Him a refuge in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has stood through three years of summaries without pressing you once.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are not the second sheet, and no column of figures anywhere has ever been permitted to say what kind of man is reading it. It is written that God is a refuge for us, and the Spirit of God is making that a real room tonight rather than a line in a psalm.
Both numbers. Out loud. Then the appointment.
Declare this over yourself
- Gap between two sheets in one drawer, you are not a description of this man. Psalm 62:8 says pour out your heart before him, so by the Holy Spirit I say both numbers out loud tonight and keep going until I am empty, in the name of Jesus.
- Three years of holding it alone, you have no right to another month. The written word tells the people to pour it out rather than to hold it, and by the Holy Spirit I book time with somebody qualified and I go.
- Father, You have stood through three years of my summaries and never once pressed me. Your word says God is a refuge for us, so by Your Spirit I empty the whole container in front of You, and I go in and open in the morning.
