What I SignedJohn 8:32

I Have Not Told One Person The Truth

This message is for the man whose entire circle holds a false picture of how this is going, and who has begun to feel like the picture is a person he keeps alive

There is a version of you that other people know.

He is doing all right. He is busy, which is a good sign. He does not go into detail because he is not the sort of man who talks about money, and everybody respects that.

That man does not exist.

You made him about two years ago, without meaning to, out of a series of reasonable answers to reasonable questions. Every one of those answers was defensible. Not one of them was the truth.

And now he requires upkeep.

That is the thing you did not see coming. He has to be consistent. If you told your brother in April that it was picking up, you cannot tell him in September that it has been flat for three years, because he will do the arithmetic and know that you told him something false in April.

So you maintain him. Every conversation, quietly, in the background, you check what he has said before.

It is exhausting in a very particular way, and it has started to make you avoid people.

You did not go on Sunday. You said you were tired and you were tired, and you were also not going to sit at a table for three hours keeping somebody upright who is not there.

Here is what has begun to worry you.

You are not sure you know how to say a true sentence about this any more. The mechanism for it has rusted, and you have started to wonder whether you would be able to do it even if you decided to.

There is a verse about truth that is more practical than people think.

The truth shall make you free

Jesus says something about truth that gets quoted on walls, and the sentence before it matters.

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32, King James Version)

The verse before this one is about continuing in His word. So the truth in question is not a general principle. It is a specific thing a person comes to know and then stands in.

And the effect named is freedom. Not safety. Not approval. Freedom, which is the ability to move.

You have been immobilized by something that could be ended with one sentence, and John 8:32 puts the freedom on the far side of the truth rather than the far side of the outcome. The Holy Spirit is the one who does the freeing, and He does not require the numbers to change first.

Now think about what is actually holding you still.

It is not the obligation. A man can move around inside an obligation. He can go to Sunday dinner. He can sit at a table.

What is holding you still is the maintenance. Every relationship now has a job attached to it, and a man with a job attached to every relationship stops going places.

You are not tired of people, and it is written that the truth is what makes a person free to move. The Spirit of God is the one who can tell the difference between a man who has withdrawn and a man who is exhausted, and John 8 names the way back out.

And there is something in the word know that is worth pausing on.

Ye shall know the truth. Knowing is not the same as announcing. He does not say ye shall publish the truth, or explain it to everybody, or hold a meeting.

The freedom begins with a man knowing it himself and then standing where he can be seen knowing it.

You have already done the knowing part, and Scripture puts the freedom in the knowing rather than in the announcement. The Holy Spirit is the one who has known it with you the whole time, and John 8:32 does not require a speech.

Twelve words to one person

Let me make the instruction as small as it actually is, because something enormous has been getting imagined here.

The picture in your head is a conversation. A sitting-down, a full account, a set of figures, somebody's face changing, questions with no answers.

That is not what this is. That conversation may never need to happen. What needs to happen is one true sentence, of about twelve words, to one person.

It has been flat for three years and I have not been saying so. That is it. That is the whole thing. Twelve words and then stop talking.

You are able to end two years of maintenance with twelve words, and it is written that the truth is what sets a person free. The Spirit of God is the one who makes twelve words do that much, and John 8 is where the mechanism is given.

The reason it can be that short is that you are not delivering information. You are dismantling a fiction. A fiction only needs one true sentence standing next to it to stop being load bearing.

And the reason it has to be to one person, rather than announced generally, is that you only need one room in your life where the real man is the one sitting there. One room is enough to breathe in.

You have been needing one room rather than a general disclosure, and the written word puts the freedom in the truth rather than in how many people hear it. The Holy Spirit is the one who goes into that room ahead of a man, and John 8:32 is why the room does not have to be large.

And one plain thing, because this is the heaviest row on this site. If the maintenance and the weight have taken your nights somewhere dark, and thoughts about not being here have started arriving, that is not something to carry silently: call or text 988, the crisis line, tonight, and tell one real person, a doctor or a pastor you trust. And for the numbers themselves, take them to somebody qualified to read them.

You have never been meant to be the only one who knows how heavy this is, and it is written that the truth is what makes a person free. The Spirit of God is the one who goes with a man into that call, and John 8 is why he does not have to make it alone.

Choose the person tonight

So here is the thing to do, and it happens this week.

Pick one person. Not the easiest one. The one you would actually want to know, which is usually somebody slightly harder.

Say the sentence. Twelve words. Then stop talking, and let them say whatever they say.

You are dismantling a fiction rather than making a confession, and John 8:32 has been holding the freedom on the other side of that sentence the whole time. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when it is said, and He has known the real version for two years.

They will probably say they had wondered. That is what people usually say, because most people are not fooled and are simply being polite about it.

And then the maintenance stops, at least in that one relationship, and you will find out how heavy it was by how light that particular room becomes.

You have been carrying something that comes off in a single sentence, and Scripture puts the freeing in the truth rather than in the fixing. The Holy Spirit is the one who lifts it, and John 8:32 is where He said He would.

Then go and open in the morning, and the obligation is exactly what it was.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who stayed home on a Sunday.

You have been carrying a picture that was never a person, and the truth about your own month has never once been something you needed permission to say. John 8:32 says ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has known the real version alongside you for two years.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are twelve words away from one room where the real man is the one sitting in it, and no fiction anywhere has ever survived one true sentence standing next to it. It is written that the truth makes a person free, and the Spirit of God is making that a thing that happens in a driveway rather than a principle on a wall.

One person. Twelve words. Then stop.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Man other people think I am, you are not somebody I have to keep upright. John 8:32 says ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free, so by the Holy Spirit I say twelve true words to one person this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Two years of maintenance, you have no right to another Sunday. The written word puts the freeing in the truth rather than in the outcome, and by the Holy Spirit I stop keeping a fiction standing.
  3. Father, You have known the real version of every month alongside me. Your word says the truth shall make you free, so by Your Spirit I say the one sentence in the driveway, and then I stop talking.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
