I Run Myself Against Two Hundred Strangers

This message is for the woman comparing herself to a leaderboard of people she has never met, who cannot tell any more which of her own days were good

Somebody asked you how Tuesday went and you could not answer.

Not because it was bad. Because you genuinely did not know, and you had to go and look, and even after looking you were not certain.

That is the thing this is actually about.

There is a list, and the list has two hundred and eleven names on it, and you know exactly where you sit on it in any given week.

You have never met one of those people. Not one. You would not recognize a single face on that list if they walked into your building.

And yet they have become the instrument. Whether Tuesday was good is now a question about relative position, and relative position is not something a person can feel; it is something a person looks up.

So the ability to know what kind of day you have had has gone. It did not go dramatically. It went the way a sense goes when it stops being used.

Your mother asked you on Sunday whether you enjoy it. You said yes, and then you sat in the car afterward and could not have told her one specific thing about the week that was good.

There is a verse that hands something back.

Let every man prove his own work

Paul writes a plain instruction about self-assessment and it is more radical than it sounds.

But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. (Galatians 6:4, King James Version)

Prove his own work. Prove is a testing word: put it to the test and see what it is.

And the object is his own work. Not the average. Not the field. His own.

You have your own work to prove rather than a field to be ranked in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hands that instrument back to somebody who has been using a different one. Galatians 6:4 puts the testing on what a person actually did, and He is handing it back now.

Now the second half, because it is the part that will feel strange.

Then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. Rejoicing in himself alone. That sounds almost self-satisfied until you see what it is contrasted with.

The alternative is rejoicing in another, which means a person's gladness about their own day depends on where somebody else's day landed. That is the thing being ruled out, and it is exactly what a leaderboard produces.

You are permitted to be glad about a Tuesday without checking anything, and Scripture calls that rejoicing in himself alone rather than pride. The Spirit of God is the one who gives that permission, and it is written in Galatians 6 as the whole point of the instruction.

And there is something worth noticing about who is not in the verse.

Nobody else is. Paul does not say prove your own work and then compare it charitably. He does not say benchmark. He removes the other people entirely from the operation.

You have been given an operation with nobody else in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the assessing alongside a person. The written word takes the field out of the assessment completely, and Galatians 6:4 leaves the strangers out of it.

The sense that stopped being used

Let me name what has actually been lost, because it is not confidence.

It is a faculty. Every person is born able to tell whether a day was good. It is a real perception, made out of a hundred small readings: how the room felt, whether the hard thing got handled, whether somebody left better than they arrived.

You had that. You used it for years before there was a list.

It has gone quiet because it has been overruled every single time. A faculty that is consulted and then ignored two hundred times stops volunteering.

You have not lost a faculty, and Scripture assumes a person can prove their own work rather than teaching them how. The Spirit of God is the one who put that sense in you, and Galatians 6 assumes it is still there to be used.

And here is why it matters more than the ranking does.

The list is not going anywhere. It will be there next quarter and the quarter after, and it is a legitimate thing for a business to keep.

But a woman who cannot tell whether Tuesday was good has no way to steer. She cannot repeat what worked, because she cannot identify what worked. Everything becomes a wait for a number.

You are able to know what kind of day you had before anybody publishes anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one who restores a sense that has gone quiet. It is written that a person proves their own work, and He restores it by having it used.

Three things, and then decide

So here is the thing to do, and it is tonight, and it takes four minutes.

Write down three things that happened on Tuesday. Not figures. Things.

A conversation. Something that went wrong and got handled. A person who left in a better state than they came in. The thing you fixed at ten past seven that nobody knows about.

Then decide about Tuesday. Was it a good day. Say your answer out loud.

And do not open anything to check.

You are proving your own work rather than looking up a position, and Galatians 6:4 says let every man prove his own work. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in that judgment, and He is not going to overrule it with a column.

The reason it has to be three specific things is that a general impression is easy to overturn. A number beats a feeling every time. Three concrete events are harder to overturn: they actually happened, they are yours, and no ranking anywhere has anything to say about whether they occurred.

You have evidence that a chart cannot reach, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a woman's own reading count again. The written word puts the rejoicing in the work itself rather than in a comparison, and Galatians 6:4 is where the instrument is handed back.

Then go and open in the morning, and the list says exactly what the list says.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman sitting in a car outside her mother's house.

You have your own work to prove and your own day to weigh, and a stranger's column has never once been able to tell you what kind of Tuesday you had. Galatians 6:4 says let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and the Holy Spirit is the one handing that instrument back tonight.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are permitted to be glad about a day without checking anything first, and no leaderboard anywhere has ever been able to say whether the hard thing got handled well. It is written that the rejoicing is in himself alone and not in another, and the Spirit of God is making that a working faculty rather than a permission slip.

Three things. Then decide. Do not look.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Strangers on a leaderboard, you are not the instrument I weigh a Tuesday with. I am done comparing my own day to yours. Galatians 6:4 says let every man prove his own work, so by the Holy Spirit I write three things down tonight and decide without looking, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Faculty that went quiet from being overruled, you have not gone anywhere and you are not lost. The written word assumes a person can prove their own work, and by the Holy Spirit I use it tonight rather than wait for a number.
  3. Father, You have never once needed a chart to know what kind of day I had. Your word says then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, so by Your Spirit I name three real things, and I decide about my own Tuesday.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
