I Will Be A Line In A Report When I Go

You have seen three of them go.

The first was a man you liked. Twenty-something years. He was a line in the quarterly, in a list, with a date and a location code, and there was nothing wrong with any of it.

The second one you did not know well.

The third was a woman who had held a difficult building through two difficult years, and she got the same line with a different date.

And you looked at that page and did the obvious thing, which is that you saw your own.

Same list. Same shape. A date and a code and a line, some time in the next few years, and then a new name in the next quarterly.

Here is what makes this hard to say out loud without sounding morbid.

You are not afraid of it. You are not ill and you are not being pushed and there is no crisis. You have another good run in you.

It is just that having seen exactly what the record looks like, you cannot now unsee what your own will be, and something in you has been quietly bothered since March.

You have not mentioned it to your wife because it would worry her for no reason at all.

There is a verse about a day, and it is one of the shortest and most surprising in the psalms.

Precious in the sight of the LORD

The psalmist says something in one line that almost nobody expects to find in a book.

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. (Psalm 116:15, King James Version)

Precious. That is a valuation word. It means something is treated as costly and handled with care.

And what is being valued is not a life, or a career, or a body of work. It is the day. The going.

You have a day already marked by somebody who calls it precious, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds that day. Psalm 116:15 puts the value on the going rather than only on the living, and He has held it since long before there were quarterly reports.

Now the contrast, because it is the whole point.

A quarterly report handles a departure administratively. It has to. It is a document about buildings and dates and somebody has to write it and there is no other way to do it.

That page is not disrespect. It is simply the only register that a document like that has.

You have been reading an administrative register as though it were the only one, and it is written that a day like that is precious in the sight of the LORD. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a different kind of record, and Psalm 116 is where the other register is named.

And there is something in the phrase in the sight of that is worth catching.

In the sight of the LORD. It is about where He is looking. Not about what gets circulated.

The quarterly is what gets circulated. The other thing is where God's eyes are. Those are not competing accounts and one of them is not smaller; they are simply about entirely different things.

You are inside two records rather than one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been keeping it. Scripture puts the second one in the sight of God rather than in a list, and Psalm 116:15 is where its existence is stated.

What you can actually decide

Let me be practical, because there is one thing here that is genuinely in your hands and one that is not.

The report is not in your hands. It will say what those documents say and nobody is going to change the format for anybody, and it would be strange to ask.

What is in your hands is what the people in that building know about the years, and that is decided by whether anybody ever says it out loud.

At the moment nobody knows what you would want said. If somebody asked your successor to describe what you did here, they would guess, and they would guess wrong in about three places.

You have something to hand over that no report was ever going to carry, and the written word puts the precious thing outside every administrative account. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a thing from a man's head into somebody else's, and He does it through a sentence rather than a document.

And there is a reason not to leave it.

Everything unsaid gets guessed at. That is not anybody's fault. People fill gaps, and they fill them with whatever they happened to see, and what they happened to see is usually the last two years rather than the first fifteen.

You are able to say it once rather than let it be assembled by people who arrived late, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a said thing stick. It is written that God holds that day as costly, and Psalm 116 is why the day itself is not the end of the account.

Say it to one person

So here is the thing to do, and it is one conversation, and it is not a speech.

Tell one person what you actually want said about your years there. Out loud. Once.

Not the modest version. The true one. That you held it through a particular year. That you trained a particular person. That a particular thing in that building exists because you would not let it go.

Then stop, and let it be said.

You are handing something over rather than asking for anything, and Psalm 116:15 has your day held as precious whatever any list says. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in that conversation, and He is not embarrassed by a man saying true things about his own work.

Pick somebody who will still be there. That is the only criterion. Not the person you like most; the person who will be in that building after you are not.

And do not frame it as a legacy conversation, because that makes it a large thing and large things do not get said. Say it in a doorway on an ordinary afternoon.

You have one afternoon and about ninety seconds available, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it after that. The written word never once required a man to leave his own account to be guessed at, and Psalm 116:15 is where the day itself is already valued.

Then go and open in the morning, because you have another good run in you and the report is years away.
