The Term Runs Out And I Do Not Know

There is a date coming and you have been not thinking about it for about five months.

You know exactly when it is. You have known for years, it was on the first page of the thing you signed, and now it is close enough that the not thinking about it takes effort.

And the question is not really renew or leave. You have run those numbers, both ways, several times, and they do not settle it, which is how you know it is not a numbers question.

What is actually underneath it is worse, and I think it is this: whichever way you go, you are afraid the years are about to be revealed as a waste. If you renew, you are afraid you are only doing it because you cannot see anything else, and that would make the next term the same as the last one. If you leave, you are afraid you will look back and see a long stretch of your life with nothing left at the end of it.

I am not going to tell you which to do. That is not mine and it is genuinely not mine: I do not know your numbers, your family, your health or your market. And I am not going to tell you that one of them is the faithful choice, because that framing is a lie and it does real damage to people.

What I have come with is the fear underneath, because that one I can actually put a word to.

Your labor is not in vain in the Lord

There is a sentence Paul puts at the end of a long chapter, and where it sits is part of what it means.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. (1 Corinthians 15:58, King James Version)

Your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

It comes at the end of the resurrection chapter, which is a chapter about things that look finished not being finished, and it is aimed at people who were asking whether any of what they were doing amounted to anything.

And notice that it is stated as something already known. Forasmuch as ye know. It is not offered as encouragement to be worked up. It is put down as a fact the reader is assumed to be standing on.

Not in vain. Not: will be rewarded, not: will make sense later, not: will turn out to have been strategic. Not in vain, which is a claim about what the years already are rather than about how they resolve.

First Corinthians 15:58 states the labor as already not wasted rather than as pending, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that reach somebody five months out from a date.

You are standing on years that already count, and their value has never once been waiting on how this ends. First Corinthians 15:58 says your labor is not in vain in the Lord and states it as known rather than promised, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a floor instead of a comfort.

Both fears are the same fear

Now the thing I actually want you to see, because once it is visible the decision gets much lighter.

Look at your two fears again. Renewing out of blindness. Leaving with nothing to show. They look opposite and they are not. They are the same fear wearing two coats, and the fear is that the years only count if the ending validates them.

That is the belief doing the damage, and it is not in the verse anywhere, and 1 Corinthians 15:58 is standing directly against it, and the Holy Spirit is not the source of a rule that says a stretch of a life has to be justified by its exit.

You have been treating the decision as a verdict on the past. It is not. It is a decision about the future, made by somebody who is allowed to make it freely, and the past is already settled and is not on the table.

You are making a decision about what comes next, and the years behind you have never once been on trial in it. The written word calls the labor not in vain without reference to any outcome, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the past off the table so a person can actually decide.

Write down what it made in you

So here is the assignment, and it is the last one on this site.

Write down one thing this work made in you.

Not what it earned. Not what it built outside. Something in you: a thing you can do now, a way you handle people, a nerve you did not have, a kind of patience, a thing you know about yourself that you did not know when you signed.

Write it on paper. Then read it before any conversation about renewing, including the ones you have with yourself in the car. First Corinthians 15:58 is the sentence sitting underneath it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line steady a person in the middle of a moving decision.

Because that thing is not on the paperwork anywhere. It is not in the accounts, it does not transfer, nobody will value it in a negotiation, and it is genuinely yours and it goes with you whichever way you walk out of this.

First Corinthians 15:58 puts the value in the labor itself rather than in what the labor produced, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person what a decade actually made.

You are able to name what these years built in you, and the paperwork has never once been where it was recorded. First Corinthians 15:58 says the labor is not in vain without measuring the yield, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes the invisible part of a decade visible to the person who lived it.
