I Will Hand This On And It Will Not Say Me

You started making the list in October.

Not a formal list. A list on the back of a delivery sheet, because you had started thinking about the handover and you wanted to know what there actually was.

Keys. The order the deliveries come. The number for the man who fixes the compressor, which is not the official number and works better. Which of the doors sticks in August.

Forty-one items and every single one of them is a thing you know, not a thing you made.

That was the moment. You put the pen down on the bench and looked at the sheet and understood there was nothing on it that was yours.

Everything in the building belongs to the arrangement. The layout is theirs. The way it looks is theirs. Even the good habits are theirs on paper, because they are in the pattern somewhere.

Nineteen years, and what you are handing over is a set of keys and a list of quirks.

You have not said any of this to your wife. She would say something kind and true and you do not want a kind and true thing, because a kind and true thing would close it and it is not closed.

So here is what I want to do. I want to take the list apart, because the list is wrong. Not the forty-one items. The idea that the forty-one items are the handover.

Commit thou to faithful men

Paul is at the end and he writes to a younger man about what to do with what he was given.

And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. (2 Timothy 2:2, King James Version)

Look at what is being handed on and what is not.

Not a building. Not a system. Not a list of quirks and door numbers. The things that thou hast heard. And the container he is putting them into is not a document. It is people.

You have been handing this on for nineteen years already, and 2 Timothy 2:2 puts the handover into faithful people rather than into an inventory. The Holy Spirit is the one who has been moving it out of you and into them the whole time, and He did not wait for October.

That is not a comfort. That is a description of what has actually happened in that building.

Think about the young one who came in at nineteen and could not look a customer in the eye. He runs a shift now. He runs it a particular way, and the particular way is not in any manual anywhere.

You are already inside four or five people who do things the way you do them, and Scripture calls that the real deposit rather than the paperwork. The Spirit of God is the one who made that transfer happen, and it is written in 2 Timothy 2 that this is how a life's work moves.

And look at the last clause, because it is the one that undoes the sadness.

Who shall be able to teach others also. It does not stop at the second person. It goes to a third that Paul will never meet and never hear about.

You have already reached people you have never met, and the written word runs the handover out past the second generation into a third. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries it that far, and 2 Timothy 2:2 is where He says so plainly.

What the list is actually for

Let me be fair to the list, because it is not worthless.

Forty-one items is real. The compressor man's number will save the next person eleven hours over a year. Knowing which door sticks in August is a small mercy.

But a list is a maintenance document. It keeps a building running. It was never going to be a record of a man.

You have been reading a maintenance document as if it were an obituary, and finding it thin, which it is, because that is not what it is for.

You have been holding the wrong page and grading yourself against it, and it is written that the things heard get committed to faithful people rather than to a sheet. The Spirit of God is the one who tells a man which document is which, and He does it without making him feel foolish.

There is something else, and it is the part that will actually help on the first Monday.

The new person is going to walk in and inherit a room full of your decisions without knowing they are decisions. The way people speak to each other in the back. What gets said when somebody makes a mistake. Whether it is safe to say you do not know something.

None of that is in the pattern. All of it is nineteen years of one man setting a temperature.

You are handing over something that will still be in that room in five years, and Scripture puts the deposit in people rather than in fixtures. The Holy Spirit is the one who has been building it in there since your first year, and 2 Timothy 2 names that as the thing worth committing.

Name one of them out loud

Here is the practical thing, and it is a strange one, and it takes about a minute.

Name one person in that building who does something your way. Say their name out loud, on your own, and then say what it is that they do.

He waits until the end of a sentence before he answers. She checks the back door twice. He tells a new person the thing he got wrong in his first week, so they will not be frightened.

You are naming a real transfer rather than consoling yourself, and 2 Timothy 2:2 has been describing exactly that transfer since Paul wrote it down. The Spirit of God is the one who did the moving, and He is not surprised to hear it said out loud after nineteen years.

The reason to say it out loud is that the forty-one item list is written down and the people are not. Written things feel real and unwritten things feel like sentiment.

Say four names out loud and they stop being sentiment. They become an inventory of their own, and it is longer than forty-one items, and it walks out of the building every night under its own power.

You have an inventory nobody could ever hand to a successor on a sheet, and the written word makes people the container rather than the record. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that list, and He has been keeping it since before there was any talk of handing anything over.

Then go back in and do the ordinary work, because there is still a run of it left.
