Not My NameIsaiah 49:16

Twenty Two Years And No Plaque

This message is for the long serving operator who worked out there will be nothing anywhere with her name on it when this ends, and is more shaken by that than she expected

It came to you in a parking lot, of all places.

You were standing by the car with the keys in your hand and it arrived fully formed, the way these things do: when this ends, there will be nothing anywhere with my name on it.

Twenty-two years. Not twenty-two years of turning up, either. Twenty-two years of the difficult version. Two moves, one flood, the winter with the road closed, and every single person who has come through that door in all of it.

And when it ends, whenever it ends and however it ends, the sign stays the same, the letters stay the same, and somebody else opens it on a Monday.

There will be no plaque. There is nowhere for a plaque to go and no arrangement under which one would be made.

You have never been a person who wanted a fuss. That is what surprised you. You would have said, and you would have meant it, that you did not need anything of the kind.

But standing there with the keys you understood that you had been quietly assuming something would exist, and that you had never once checked whether it would.

Nothing will.

You have not said this to anybody, because it sounds like vanity when you put it into words, and because the people who love you would immediately try to fix it, and there is nothing to fix.

So let me say the true thing about it instead, and it is not a consolation. It is an older and stranger fact than that.

Graven upon the palms

There is a moment in Isaiah where God is answering a people who believe they have been forgotten, and the answer is one of the most physical sentences in the book.

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me. (Isaiah 49:16, King James Version)

Graven. Not written. Not noted. Cut in.

And not on a wall or a scroll or a record somewhere. On the palms of the hands, which is the place a person cannot look away from, because the hands are always in front of you.

You have been engraved in the one place that never gets repainted, and Isaiah 49:16 puts it on the palms rather than on a surface anybody could change. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ancient sentence land on a woman standing in a parking lot with her keys.

Now sit with what the verse is answering, because that is the part that will get you.

The verse just before it is a people saying the LORD has forsaken and forgotten them. The complaint is exactly yours, in older words: nobody has kept a record of us.

You are not the first person to stand somewhere holding that particular sentence, and Scripture answers it directly rather than telling anybody they should not feel it. The Spirit of God is the one who does not scold a woman for arriving at that question after twenty-two years, and it is written in Isaiah 49 what the answer was.

And notice the second half. Thy walls are continually before me.

Not thy achievements. Not thy results. Thy walls. The physical place. The actual building.

You have a room that is continually in front of God, and the written word names walls rather than numbers as the thing He keeps looking at. The Holy Spirit is the one who has been holding that building in view for the whole twenty-two years, including the flood and the winter the road closed.

What a plaque is actually for

Let me be plain about what a plaque does, because naming it takes some of the weight out.

A plaque is a durable object that tells strangers a person was here. It exists because human memory is short and buildings outlive people, and it is a good and human thing to want.

What it cannot do is keep anything. A plaque is a pointer. It points at a memory that lives in people, and when those people are gone the plaque is a name nobody recognizes on a wall.

So the wanting is not vanity. The wanting is an instinct that the years should be held somewhere. The instinct is right and the object is weak.

You have been reaching for a weak container to hold something enormous, and Isaiah 49 puts the holding in the hands of God rather than in brass. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps what a wall cannot, and He has been keeping it since your first winter.

There is one more thing in it and it is the practical one.

Twenty-two years did not go into a wall. It went into people. Every one of them is walking around somewhere carrying something you handed them, mostly without knowing they are carrying it.

That is not a poetic substitute for a plaque. That is a more durable form of storage than brass, and it is moving around under its own power in about four hundred people.

You are already recorded in more places than any building could hold, and it is written that God keeps the walls continually before Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who put the twenty-two years into people rather than into a fixture, and He did it on purpose.

Write it down yourself

Here is the small thing, and it is going to feel strange, which is exactly why it works.

Take one piece of paper. Write your own name on it. Write the number of years. Write two or three of the things nobody else knows about, the flood, the winter, whichever ones come.

Then put it somewhere only you will see it. A drawer. The back of a book. It does not matter.

You are allowed to make your own record, and Scripture never once required a person to wait for somebody else to write their name down. The Spirit of God is the one who receives that piece of paper, and Isaiah 49:16 shows Him doing the same thing on His own hands.

The reason to do it by hand is that the ache has been sitting in you unaddressed since the parking lot, and an unaddressed ache goes looking for evidence that you did not matter.

Give it something to hold and it stops looking.

You have twenty-two years that are already held, and the written word puts them somewhere a change of signage cannot reach. The Holy Spirit is the one who settles that in a woman rather than merely informing her of it, and He has been ready to do it since the day in the parking lot.

Then go and open on Monday and keep the room the way you keep it.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman with her keys in her hand.

You have been engraved somewhere that cannot be repainted, and twenty-two years has never once been kept anywhere that a change of signage could reach. Isaiah 49:16 says graven upon the palms of my hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has held that building continually before God since the first winter.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are recorded in about four hundred people who are walking around carrying what you handed them, and no wall anywhere was ever going to hold that. It is written that thy walls are continually before me, and the Spirit of God is making that a settled thing in a woman rather than a comfort about the future.

Nothing has to go on a wall for it to be kept.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Empty wall where a plaque would go, you are not the record of twenty-two years. Isaiah 49:16 says graven upon the palms of my hands, so by the Holy Spirit I write my own name and my own years on paper tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of being unrecorded, you have no claim on this woman. The written word says thy walls are continually before me, and by the Holy Spirit I put down the assumption I never checked and I pick up what is written.
  3. Father, You have never once needed a brass plate to keep track of me. Your word says You have graven me upon Your palms, so by Your Spirit I stop waiting for somebody to write it down, and I go and open on Monday.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
