The Name Over the Door Is Not Mine

Somebody walked in on Tuesday and said what a good place this is.

They did not mean you. They meant the name on the sign, because that is the only name they had, and it is the name in the advertising and the name on the cup and the name they will use when they tell somebody else about it.

And every single thing that made it a good place on Tuesday was done by you. The floor. The temperature of the room. The person on the counter, who is good because you hired them and trained them and had a hard conversation with them in March. The reason the second machine works is that you drove forty minutes on a Sunday to collect a part.

None of that is on the sign.

I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this piece that is a grievance, and grievance is not what I have come with. The name is theirs. You knew that going in, you signed for it deliberately, and it brings people through the door who would not otherwise have come. That arrangement is honest and there is nothing to expose.

The question is a different one, and quieter. It is whether anybody knows it was you.

God is not unrighteous to forget

There is a sentence in Hebrews that I have wanted to hand somebody for a long time, and the strange thing about it is the way it is constructed. It does not say God remembers. It says something firmer than that.

For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. (Hebrews 6:10, King James Version)

Not unrighteous to forget.

Read the shape of that. It puts forgetting in the category of injustice. It says that for God to lose track of what you actually did would be a wrong, and He does not do wrong, therefore He has not lost track of it.

That is a much stronger claim than a sentiment about God noticing. It is a claim about His character, and it means the record of Tuesday is not dependent on anybody in the building being observant.

Hebrews 6:10 puts the forgetting of real work into the category of unrighteousness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that reach a person who has begun to feel like furniture.

You are known by name in the place where the accounting actually happens, and your work has never once gone unrecorded there. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about God rather than a nice thought about you.

Anonymous to people is not anonymous

Now I want to separate two things that have been sitting on top of each other in you, because when they come apart most of the weight goes.

Your work is unattributed. That is true, and it is structural, and it will not change while the arrangement stands. Nobody who walks in is going to learn your name and there is no mechanism by which they would.

Your work is not unknown. That is a different sentence entirely.

The first is about a sign. The second is about whether anything you do lands anywhere permanent, and Hebrews 6:10 answers the second and says nothing at all about the first, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps those two apart in a person who has been collapsing them.

You have been reading the silence of customers as a verdict on the value of the work. It is not a verdict. It is the ordinary condition of a brand, which is designed to be the thing people remember, and it is doing exactly what it was built to do.

You are doing work that is fully known, and the sign over the door has never once been the register it is written in. The written word says God is not unrighteous to forget what you have shown, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates being unnamed by strangers from being unknown.

Say the specific thing

So here is the assignment, and it is small and slightly uncomfortable and that is deliberate.

Say out loud, to yourself, in the car or the back room, one specific thing you did well this week that nobody will attribute to you.

Specific. Not I worked hard. Something like: I noticed the delivery was short before it went out and I fixed it in nine minutes and no customer ever knew there was a problem.

Say it in a full sentence, out loud, once.

Not to build yourself up. Because a thing spoken out loud has been said in a room, and a thing that has only ever been thought has not. You have thought about this for two years and never once said it, and the difference between those is larger than it sounds.

Hebrews 6:10 has the work named in writing rather than assumed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when somebody finally says a true sentence about their own hands.

You are able to name your own work without needing anybody to agree, and it has never once required an audience. Hebrews 6:10 names the work and the labor of love out loud in the text, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in a plain true sentence said by a person alone in a back room.
