Not My Name1 Samuel 16:7

Nobody Will Ever Know I Did That

This message is for the operator who did the right and expensive thing at two in the morning with nobody there to see it, and cannot get the emptiness of that to sit still

It happened at about two.

You will not describe it here in detail and you do not need to. You found something. It was going to cost real money to put right, and nobody was ever going to find out if you did not.

Not nobody in the sense of probably nobody. Nobody. There was no record of it. There was no camera on it. The only person in the building was you.

And you stood there for a while, which you are not proud of, and then you did the expensive thing.

You got home at a quarter to four and you did not feel noble. That is the part that has been sitting on you for two weeks.

You felt hollow.

You had expected something. Not a parade. Some small internal reward, the feeling a man is supposed to get. And what came instead was a flat empty room in the chest and a long drive with nothing in it.

So now there is a question you have been circling and it is a serious one.

If nobody ever knows, did it count.

You would never say that out loud. It sounds like the question of a man who is not really honest, only publicly honest. But it has been running under the days since, and questions that run under days do not go away because a man disapproves of them.

There is a verse that answers it directly, and it does not answer it the way you are expecting.

The LORD looketh on the heart

A prophet is sent to a house to find a king, and he starts sizing up the tall one, and God stops him.

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7, King James Version)

Read the second half slowly. Man looks at the outside. The LORD looks at the heart.

That is not a comfort about how God will one day review the tape. It is a statement about where His attention is aimed right now, continuously, by nature.

You have been watched at the level nobody else can reach, and 1 Samuel 16:7 says God's looking goes to the heart rather than to the record. The Holy Spirit is the one who was in that building at two in the morning, and He was not waiting for a report.

So the question of whether it counted has a plain answer, and the answer is that it was the most fully witnessed thing you did all month.

Everything else in that building was seen by people, which means it was seen from the outside. That one thing was seen from the inside, by the only witness who works that way.

You were being looked at all the way through while you stood there deciding, and Scripture says the LORD sees not as man sees. The Spirit of God was the one present for the part nobody records, and it is written in 1 Samuel 16 that this is exactly the level He operates at.

Now the harder half, which is the hollowness.

Why it felt like nothing

A feeling was expected and no feeling came. And that has quietly been taken as evidence that the whole thing was pointless, or worse, that something is wrong with the man who did it.

Here is what actually happened.

The feeling a man gets from doing right is almost always a social feeling. It comes from being seen doing it. Strip the seeing out and the feeling does not arrive, because the feeling was never the point and was never the reward.

What happened at two in the morning had the reward removed on purpose. That is not a defect in the event. That is what makes it the kind of thing 1 Samuel is talking about.

You are not broken because it felt like nothing, and the written word puts the value on the heart rather than on what a man feels afterward. The Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man the truth about an empty drive home, and He is not disappointed in somebody who wanted something back.

There is a second thing under it, and it is worth naming plainly.

It was not done for the customer, and it was not done for the people whose name is on the front. It was done because of what a man would have had to be from then on if he had walked away.

That is the heart the verse is talking about. That is not a small thing that happened at two in the morning. That is a man deciding who he is, alone, with no audience and nothing riding on it but himself.

You have settled something about your own character that no arrangement anywhere could have made you settle, and Scripture calls that the place where God is looking. The Spirit of God is the one who was there for the deciding, and 1 Samuel 16:7 says the outside was never what He was reading.

And the hollowness will pass. It is passing already, or this would not be getting read.

What to do with an unwitnessed thing

There is one practical instruction and it is the same one that works every time.

Say it out loud. On your own. Once.

Not to your wife, unless that is what you want. Not to anybody at work. Say it to the One who was already there, in plain language, like a man reporting a thing to somebody who was standing next to him at the time.

You are speaking to a witness rather than filing a claim, and it is written that the LORD looks on the heart while the thing is happening. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an event out of a man's chest and puts it somewhere it can rest.

The reason it works is not mystical. An unspoken thing keeps circling. It comes back at odd hours, it looks for a place to land, and if it never lands it goes sour and turns into either pride or cynicism.

Said out loud to the One who saw it, it lands. And a landed thing stops circling.

You have somewhere to put a thing nobody will ever know about, and the written word opened that place long before it was needed at two in the morning. The Spirit of God is the one who receives it, and He has been holding it for two weeks already.

Then it is back in and open at the usual time, and nobody will ever mention it, ever.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man on a long empty drive at a quarter to four.

You were not alone at two in the morning, and there has never once been a part of this work that God had to be told about afterward. First Samuel 16:7 says the LORD sees not as man sees but looks upon the heart, and the Holy Spirit was in that building for the whole ninety seconds of standing there deciding.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have already been fully seen in the one thing nobody will ever know about, and the flatness afterward has never been a measure of what it was. It is written that God's looking goes to the heart, and the Spirit of God is making that a settled thing in a man rather than an idea about being watched.

Say it out loud once, and let it land.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Two in the morning with nobody there, you are not an empty room. First Samuel 16:7 says the LORD looketh on the heart, so by the Holy Spirit I say the whole thing out loud tonight on my own, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Suspicion that I was only ever after the feeling, you have no evidence and no standing. The written word says God sees not as man sees, and by the Holy Spirit I let the hollowness be what it is and I stop reading it as a verdict.
  3. Father, You were in that building for the ninety seconds I stood there deciding. Your word says You look upon the heart, so by Your Spirit I hand You the whole of it, and I go back in and open at the usual time.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
